Appendix 16 - Selection of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) by Healthcare Workers (HCWs) during the provision of patient care

The following table outlines the recommended PPE required to minimise the risk of cross-transmission of infection to self and others when providing patient care.

Examples of clinical scenarios are provided for each level of PPE however clinical decisions made by staff regarding use/non-use of PPE will depend on a risk assessment which should include e.g. the presenting symptoms, risk of acquisition and the availability of treatment.

The table can be used in conjunction with Appendix 11 and the A-Z of pathogens for pathogen specific guidance and supporting materials.
